Huhuanglian Rhizoma Picrorrhizae

The source is from the rhizome of Picrorhizae scrophulariflora Pennelh family Scrophulariaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in the areas of Yunnan and Tibet of China, collected in autumn, dried in the sun, cut into pieces and the crude form is used.

Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, cold in nature and attributive to the heart, liver, stomach and large intestine meridians.

Actions Clear away asthenia heat, and reduce fever of infantile malnutrition, and eliminate dampnessheat.

Application
1. For fever due to yin deficiency and hectic fever due to yin deficiency, it is usually combined with Yinchaihu (Radix Stellariae ), Digupi ( Cortex Lycii Radicis ), etc. such as Oinggu San (Powder).

2. For infantile malnutrition with fever, indigestion, abdominal distention and weight-loss, and prolonged low fever, it is usually used together with Dangshen (Radix Codonopsis ) , Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractytodis Macrocephalae), Shanzha (Fructus Crataegi) and others that can tonify qi and digest food, such as Fei'er Wan (Pill).

3. It is used for dysentery of dampness-heat type and hemorrhoids. Compared with Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), it has the weaker action to clear away heat, dry dampness and eliminate toxin, and is good at clearing away dampness-heat of the stomach and intestine. For dysentery of dampness-heat, it can be combined with Huangqin ( Radix Scutellariae ), Huangbai ( Cortex Phellodendri ) , and Baitouweng ( Radix Putsatillae ), etc.; for hemorrhoids with swelling and pain, used together with Diyu (Radix Sanguisorbae), Huaihua (Flos Sophorae ) , etc..

Usage and Dosage 5 -10 g is used in decoction for oral use.

Yinchaihu Radix Stellariae

The source is from the root of Stellaria dichotoma L. vat. lanceolata Bunge, family Caryophyllaceae. The medicinal herb is mainly produced in the areas of Ningxia, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, Gansu, and Shaanxi, etc., collected after autumn, dried in the sun, cut into pieces and the crude form is used.

Medicinal Properties Sweet in flavor and slightly cold in nature and attributive to the liver and stomach meridians.

Application

2. Lianqiao Fructus Forsythiae

The source is from the fruit of Forsythia Suspensa (Thunb.) Vahl., family Oleaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in Northeast China, North China and Northwest China and the reaches of Yangtze River. In autumn when the fruits are ripe at the early stage, Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae ) collected is known as Qingqiao, when the fruit is completely ripe, the one collected as Huangqiao and the seed as Lianqiaoxin. The crude is used.

Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, slightly cold in nature and attributive to the lung, heart and gall-bladder meridians. Actions: Clear away heat and relieve toxin, treat carbuncle, disperse lumps and stagnation, expel wind and heat.

Application

1. It is indicated for seasonal febrile diseases and exterior syndrome of exogenous wind-heat type. Its actions are similar to those of Jinyinhua (Flos Lonicerae), that is, it can also clear away heat and toxin, and is accompanied with expelling wind and heat as well, so it is usually used for heat syndrome due to exogenous attack. For the beginning of seasonal febrile diseases the pathogenic factor of which is in weifen and superficial syndrome of exogenious wind-heat type, it is combined with Jinyinhua (F los Lonicerae ), with which Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae) is added to the diaphoretic prescriptions with pungent and cool property, such as Yin Qiao San (Powder); since it is good at clearing away heart-fire, it can also be used for febrile disease involving the pericardium with restless fever, coma or delirium. Lianqiaoxin is usually used together with Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis ), Zhuyexin ( Folium Phyllostachydis Henonis ), Lianzixin (Plumula Nelumbinis). It is also used for oral ulcer due to uprising of cardiac fire.

2. Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae ) is a common medicine that treats surgical pyocutaneous diseases, can not only clear away heat and relieve toxin but also disperse stagnation. It is used for carbuncle of heat type and pyocutaneous disease or scrofula, etc. whether the carbuncle is ripe or not. It is usually used together with Tianhuafen (Radix Trichosanthis), Zihuadiding (Herba Violae), and Jinyinhua ( Flos Lonicerae ), etc.. For scrofula and subcutaneous nodes, it can be combined with Xiakucao ( Spica Prunellae), Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii ) , and Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae ) , etc.. In addition, it is also used for dysuria or dribbling urination with pain, combined with Mutong ( Caulis Akebiae), Baimaogen (Rhizoma Imperatae), etc.. Usage and Dosage 6 -15 g is used in decotion for oral use.

Notes: It is not suitable for deficiency and cold of the spleen and stomach and qi deficiency with thin pus.
Zihuadiding Herba Violae

2. For snake poisoning, the large amount of the fresh one can be ground into juice for oral use, or used with Banbianlian (Herba Lobeliae Radicantis ).

Usage and Dosage 15 -30 g is used in decoction for oral use, the amount of the fresh can be doubled, ground into juice for drinking; just right amount is used externally.
Notes: It is used with caution in the case with deficiency and cold of the spleen and stomach.

The medicinal material is mainly produced in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and to its south provinces, collected in spring and autumn, after cleaned, the fresh form is used or dried in the sun, cut into segments and the crude form is used for medication.

Qingdai Indigo Naturalis

The source is from the branch and leaf of Baphicacanthus cusia (Nees) Bremek, or Potygonum tinctorium Ait. or Isatis tinctoria L., family Acanthaceae, Polygonaceae or Cruciferae. The fallen leaves are collected in autumn, and soaked in water until they are rotten, dredged up from water and then just right amount of lime white is put in the rotten leaves, which is fully stirred until maceration extract becomes dark red from dark green, at last the foam on the solution is dredged up, which is dried in the sun for being used.

Medicinal Properties Salty in flavor, cold in nature and attributive to the liver meridian.
Actions: Clear away heat and liver-fire, and relieve toxin, cool blood and disperse maculae, and stop convulsion.

Application
1. It is indicated for overabundance of pathogenic heat manifested as fever, excessive thirst, or maculae and papules, and especially suitable for syndrome of heat involving yingfen and xuefen manifested as maculae, it is usually combined with Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae), and Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae) , etc..

2. For bleeding due to blood-heat manifested as haematemesis and epistaxis, it's used together with Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae), Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan Radicis), Baimaogen (Rhizoma Imperatae ) and others that can clear away heat and cool blood. Since it can clear away liver-fire and phlegm-heat, for liver-fire attacking the lung resulting in hemoptysis or bloody sputum, the single Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis ) is effective but also combined with the powder of Haigeke ( Concha Meretricis seu Cyclinae), that is, Dai Ge San (Powder).

3. It is generally used for mumps, laryngalgia and pyocutaneous diseases. For mumps and laryngalgia, it can be mixed with small amount of Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum) for external application, or used together with Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae ) , Banlangen (Radix Isatidis) and Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae) for oral use. For pyocutaneous disease of fire type, it can be combined with Pugongying ( Herba Taraxaci ), Zihuadiding ( Herba Violae ), Jinyinhua ( Flos Lonicerae), and others that can relieve toxic materials and treat skin diseases.

4. It is used for convulsive epilepsy due to summer-heat and convulsion or infantile convulsion; for the former, usually combined with Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) and Huashi ( Talcum), such as Biyu San (Powder) ; for the latter, usually combined with Gouteng (Ramulus Uncariae cum Uncis ) and Niuhuang ( Calculus Bovis ), etc..

Usage and Dosage 1.5 -3 g is ground into powder that is added to pill or the powder form for oral use. It is generally not used in decoction since it is difficult to dissolve in water. Just right amount is used externally.

Chuanxinlian Herba Andrographitis

The source is from the herb of Andrographis paniculata ( Bum. f. ) Nees., family Acanthaceae. The plants are cultivated in the areas of South, East and Northwest China, at the early stage of autumn when the flower blossoms, the medicinal material is collected and dried in the sun. The crude or the fresh is used. Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, cold in nature and attributive to the lung, stomach, large and small intestine meridians.

Actions Clear away heat, eliminate toxin, dry dampness and relieve swelling.
Application

1. It is generally indicated for seasonal febrile diseases, cough due to lung-heat and pulmonary abscess. For the beginning of seasonal febrile diseases with fever and sore throat, it can be combined with Jinyinhua (Flos Lonicerae ) , Lianqiao ( Fructus Forsythiae ), and Bohe (Herba Menthae ), etc. ; for cough due to lung-heat, combined with Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis ) and others that clear away lung-heat; for pulmonary abscess with thick sputum, mostly combined with Yuxingcao ( Herba Houttuyniae ), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi), etc. to clear away lung-heat and resolve pus. It is now widely used for upper respiratory tract infection and other infectious diseases.

2. It is generally indicated for dysentery due to damp-heat and stranguria due to heat. For dysentery due to damp-heat, it can be used alone or combined With Machixian ( Herba Portulacae ), Huanglian ( Rhizoma Coptidis), etc.; for stranguria due to heat with dribbling urination with pain, mostly combined with Cheqianzi (Semen Plantaginis ), Baimaogen (Rhizoma Imperatae ), and Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri), etc..

3. For carbuncle, pyogenic infection and snake-bite poisoning, the fresh can be ground into pieces for external application, or combined with Jinyinhua (Flos Lonicerae), Zaoxiu (Rhizoma Paridis), and Yejuhua ( Flos Chrysanthemi Indici), etc. for being used internally.

Usage and Dodge 6 -9 g is used in decoction for oral use. Or added to pill, powder or tablet, or prepared into injection. Just right amount is used externally.
Notes: It is not suitble for deficiency and cold of the spleen and stomach.

Banbianlian Herba Lobeliae Chinensis

The source is from the whole plant of Lobelia chinensis Lour., family Campanulaceae. The medicinal material is produced in all parts of China but more in the reaches of the Yangtze River and the south provinces of China, collected in summer, dried in the sun or in shade. The crude or the fresh can be used.

Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, cold in nature and attributive to the heart, small intestine and lung meridians.

Actions Clear away heat and eliminate toxin, promote diuresis to relieve edema.

Application
1. It is indicated for snake-bite poisoning, bee or scorpion injuries and carbuncle of heat type, especially for snake-bite poisoning and it is a common Chinese medicine to treat snake-bite poisoning. It is used internally or externally, or the fresh is ground for external application.

2. It is indicated for ascites, edema and dysuria. It has remarkable and constant actions in promoting diuresis, can be used singly or together with Cheqianzi (Semen Plantaginis ) , Zexie ( Rhizome Alismatis ) and others that promote diuresis. Usage and Dosage 10 -15 g is used in decoction for oral use; 30 -60 g of the fresh is used; just right amount is used externally.

Notes Contraindicated for deficiency syndrome with edema.
